Disturb us, Lord

Old merchant ship - 3D render
Disturb us, Lord
when we are too well pleased with ourselves,
when our dreams have come true
because we have dreamed too little,
when we arrive safely
because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord
when with the abundance of things we possess
we have lost our thirst
for the waters of life.
Having fallen in love with this life,
we have ceased to dream of eternity,
and in our efforts to build a new earth
we have allowed our vision of a new Heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord
to dare more boldly,
to venture on wider seas
when storms will show your mastery,
where losing sight of land
we shall find the stars.

We ask You to push back
the horizons of our hopes
and to push into the future
in strength, courage, hope and love.

A prayer attributed to Sir Francis Drake, 1577

  • Thank you, Janet. I love how the essence of faith that he so eloquently articulates is unchanging throughout the generations.

Lord, I pray that your church in 2015 would not shrink back but be full of faith and be true to you and your calling in our lives. May we see the fulfillment of your mission in our generation. Amen!

So well put. What faith it takes to venture out away from the shore. God, help me to be confident in taking your hand and letting loose of what holds me so closely to this world.

    • That is exactly how I felt when reading the prayer. I want to be bold and courageous and daring for the kingdom, not clinging to my safe routine.
